Choosing the Right Working Dogs
Canines are man's best friends. But with working dogs around, the word assistants should be added to that label. That is because these animals do more than just jump around and cuddle with their owners. Although it is in their nature to be affectionate and they need attention in return, the working ones are known as jacks of all trades.
For instance, have you seen a K9 trotting in airports and helping in security checks? Have you seen a German Shepherd inside police cars? If yes, then you have witnessed great examples of dogs that perform specific functions for the protection of humans.
Now if you want to know which breed would be most suitable for your specific needs, check out the list below before you make your choice:
- Herding canines are those that you would usually see with geese, sheep, and cattle. It is natural for them to stand guard and move livestock. But even if those traits are inherent, they will still need extensive training. They must learn to listen, understand, and obey commands that are issued by their owners. Some examples of the breed of herders include the Australian Shepherd, the Border collie, and the Newfoundland.
- The hunters are another example. These adorable animals are coached to do a variety of tasks such as stalking, locating, and retrieving prey. With their keen senses of smell and sight, they can point to their masters where game can be found. Under this category, the different species that can be trained are Terriers, Spaniels, and Retrievers.
- Guards are those that have been disciplined to protect people and homes. They will bark at trespassers as a way of alerting their property owners. Some may even attack, but this is not encouraged since the act is considered illegal in many areas. Pedigrees that excel in this line of work are Dobermans and Rottweilers.
- Therapy canines are those that are found in nursing homes and hospitals. They provide companionship for patients every time they visit. Some of them perform tricks to help uplift spirits. Their presence is known to have medical effects such as lowering blood pressure.
From all these bits of information, it is up to you to choose which type of dog can give you the best assistance and friendship.
